Acerca del evento

Whisky Gill Walk, Hamsterley Forest, County Durham, including Greenless Hole waterfall

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ AND SAVE - no phone signal at Hamsterley.

Do not go to the main entrance and visitor centre.

The access is by a tarmac forest road (which may not appear on sat navs or some maps) leading from Windy Bank Road just south of Mayland Farm, to the car park at Blacking Hole. This is the furthest south of the three forest car parks. If the road is closed, access will have to be via the visitor centre at the North of the Forest and by driving south through the forest Road (may be toll).

The car park is marked with an arrow here http://tinyurl.com/secretswim

OS X (Eastings) 405630

OS Y (Northings) 527380

Nearest Post Code DL13 5NJ but the access route is a little further North than this farm track's postcode

Lat (WGS84) N54:38:29 (54.641505)

Long (WGS84) W1:54:51 (-1.914284)

LR NZ056273

You may need coins for the pay and display car park (It was free in 2023). The main car park does charge, but this goes to maintain the forest.

Mobile reception is poor on non-existent so please research the access route before leaving home. Because it’s the furthest away from the visitor’s centre, this area is usually quiet.

Forestry Commission leaflet is at https://www.forestryengland.uk/sites/default/files/documents/Hamsterleyforest_trailmap_2016%20inc%20horseriding.pdf

On the section of the leaflet marked as “Blacking Hole Walks” we will follow the Whisky Gill Walk (dark green dots on map) clockwise. After walking for about ¾ hr you arrive at Greenless Hole waterfall, where the River Greenless joins Spurlswood beck.

If someone isn't able manage the "moderate" walk, we will walk anti-clockwise and get to the waterfall much quicker. Anyone wanting a longer walk can follow the trails in the leaflet.

Clothing optional at your discretion and responsibility.

Forestry England have confirmed the rights of Naturists to use their land - see https://www.flickr.com/photos/nudeswims/50892948857/
